Still an Inconvenient YouthJulius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters and subject of Still an Inconvenient Youth: Julius Malema Carries On by Fiona Forde, is one of the most Twitter-active of South Africa’s important politicians.

In an article for City Press, Jeff Kelly Lowenstein compared how the DA, the ANC and the EFF engage with the Twitter community, and looks at how this might affect them in the future.

Malema has more than twice as many followers as President Zuma and tweets frequently. As half of the world’s Twitter users are in their twenties, and one third of South African voters are younger than 30, effective and engaging tweeting seems an important way of engaging young citizens.

Read the article:

Malema’s feed is a combination of his own steady and pointed critique of the Zuma government and retweets of those who do the same. On May 27, for example, he posted four-dozen retweets. Beyond the sheer volume of people he reaches, Malema’s feed is noteworthy for its level of engagement.

His tweet on May 29, composed solely of hashtags such as #ProudlyBroughtToYoubytheANC, #Etolls, #MarikanaReport and #NkandlaReport, was retweeted close to 200 times and sparked dozens of comments and vigorous debate.
